We’ll talk about why they’re different from your average multivitamin, what you should look for in a good one, and how to choose one that fits your unique needs.

  • Whole Food-Based Ingredients: Opt for prenatal vitamins sourced from 100% organic, whole foods. These vitamins utilize a blend of vegetables, fruits, and herbs to provide nutrients in their most natural and absorbable form. 
  • High-Quality Synthetic Nutrients: While whole food-based nutrients are ideal they’re not as easy to find and some vitamins and minerals are more effective in their synthetic forms. The key is to ensure these are high-quality and in forms that your body can easily use. For instance, methylated folate is a more bioavailable than folic acid and is a better option for those with MTHFR gene mutations.

What Is The Best Prenatal To Take

If you’re struggling with morning sickness or find it hard to swallow pills, a powder form might be a better choice compared to traditional capsules. And when it comes to some nutrients like iron, you might prefer a prenatal that includes it so you’re not taking multiple pills throughout the day or you may not need the added iron so picking a prenatal without would be a good choice.

  • One-a-Day Prenatals: While there is a convenience to taking one pill a day, these prenatal multivitamins typically fall short in providing adequate levels of essential nutrients. They may also leave out crucial nutrients that are bulkier. Often, these products opt for cheaper, lower-quality synthetic nutrients that don’t offer the best support for you or your baby.

It’s also important to look out for certain harmful ingredients found in many prenatal vitamins, like artificial food dyes. Take this prenatal as an example (above image as of February 2024), it contains FD&C Blue 1 and Titanium Dioxide.  And guess what? It’s a prenatal only available by prescription.
