Morning Sickness: Natural Remedies to Help You Feel Better During Pregnancy

Hey mama, if you’re pregnant and dealing with morning sickness, you’re definitely not alone! According to estimates, between 50-70% of pregnant women experience this common pregnancy complaint.

Usually, morning sickness starts between four and nine weeks after conception and eases off around 14-16 weeks.

The symptoms can be tough, including feeling nauseous or queasy, vomiting, decreased appetite, stomach cramping, and more. You might also experience headaches, fatigue, weight loss, dizziness, sweating, nervousness, and tenderness.

How Morning Sickness Can Affect Your Pregnancy Outcomes

Did you know that morning sickness may not necessarily disappear after the first pregnancy? Around 20 percent of women who experience nausea during their first pregnancy go through the same thing during their subsequent pregnancies. The persistent feelings of nausea and vomiting can last beyond the morning hours and become quite bothersome for many moms-to-be. However, a study conducted in Oxford, England revealed that morning sickness can actually have a positive impact on pregnancy outcomes. According to the study, morning sickness is linked with a lower risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), and perinatal death. In fact, it’s believed that morning sickness might be essential in promoting early placental growth, leading to those positive results.

During my own pregnancy, I experienced morning sickness, and it wasn’t easy. My symptoms were heavy on the stomach cramping. They started around 5 weeks and ending around the 13 week mark. It definitely wasn’t fun, extremely uncomfortable when the cramps would kick in and nerve wracking.

The good news is that there are natural remedies that can help you manage the symptoms and feel more comfortable.

Here are my top three ways to reduce or stop morning sickness

1. Use Ginger! One of the best remedies that I found was ginger. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and digestion-soothing properties, and it can help stop nausea naturally. Whether it’s grated ginger in your food, ginger tea, or candied ginger slices, it can definitely help. I preferred to sip on ginger tea most days.

2. Add Bone Broth to Your Diet. Another remedy that worked for me was sipping on bone broth with a little coconut oil or MCT oil added. The nutrients in bone broths, along with the healthy fats, can help balance your hormones and blood sugar, both of which can help ease morning sickness.

3. Keep Your Blood Sugar Balanced. Lastly, it’s important to keep your blood sugar balanced. Eating more frequently and keeping portions smaller while including protein, fat, and fiber in every meal can help reduce the impact of food on your blood sugar, which can help alleviate your symptoms. Plus, blood sugar imbalances is linked to hormonal imbalances, which can be a trigger for morning sickness. This is a root cause remedy for morning sickness.

It’s important to remember that morning sickness won’t last forever and that there are natural remedies available that can help you feel more comfortable. And if you’re struggling, know that you’re not alone and that there is help available.
