Simple Homemade Apple Pie

Looking for an easy to put together last minute Thanksgiving dessert? This apple pie is easy to make and I’m for using whatever apples you like best. Each time I’ve made apple pie, I’ve used different kinds of apples. I usually go apple picking at the beginning of the season so I make the apple pie with whatever I picked. This recipe uses store-bought pie crust too so it cuts down on the baking time.

Homemade Apple Pie

This simple homemade apple pie is so quick and easy to put together. It's the perfect fall dessert for holidays and gatherings!
Cook Time 50 mins
Servings 1 pie

Ingredients

  • 2 store bought pie crusts
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 8-10 medium apples Granny Smiths, Jonagold, Honeycrisp, McIntosh
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees  fahrenheit.
  • Roll out one of the pie crust and place in the pie dish.
  • Peel and cut apples.
  • In a bowl, combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, & salt. Mix well.
  • Pour over the apples and make sure each apple is coated. Leave a little bit of the dry mixture to the side.
  • Add the lemon juice over the apples and mix in.
  • Place the apples on the pie crust. You can get fancy here and try to make it pretty but I usually just pile them all in.
  • Cut butter into small chunks and place over the apples.
  • Sprinkle the last remaining bit of dry mixture over everything.
  • Lay the second pie crust over the apples and seal the sides.
  • Cut four long slits in the top pie crust.
  • Sprinkle a little bit of sugar on top of the pie.
  • Cover the edges of the pie so it doesn’t burn. I use this pie crust shield but if you don’t have one, use tin foil.
  • Bake for 40 minutes at 425 degrees fahrenheit or until crust is a light golden brown.
  • Remove the pie crust shield and bake for another 10 minutes.

I recommend placing the pie on a baking dish before you place it in the oven. It’ll catch all the juices that may spill out while baking.

Here are some recommended apples for baking – Ginger Gold, Golden Delicious, Jazz, Jonagold, and Granny Smith. Like I said before, I just like to use different apples each time I make apple pie. I usually use about 2 or 3 different kinds for one pie. For me it’s fun to try different apples and try the different flavors and textures each time. Here’s an article explaining why certain apples are good for pies.

Mmmm this apple pie looks so tasty. I’ve never managed to make apple pie as I’m terrible with pastry but I can do apple crumble (my favourite, especially with custard!) I may have to try this recipe, though I might have to cheat on the pastry lol

Your recipe is so delicious! If there are no apples available, the same procedure do apply with other ingredients (like pineapple)?
