I am usually an over packer. It doesn’t matter what kind of trip I’m going on, a road trip or flying somewhere, I am known to over pack. I find it difficult to stick to that under 50 lbs rule for my luggage. However, on my recent trip to Montreal, I was determined to bring only the essentials. The husband and I drove to Montreal so weight limit wasn’t a problem but I still didn’t want to bring too many unnecessary items with me. I packed two makeup bags to take with me, one for actual makeup the other for the brushes.
On past vacations, I’ve taken so much makeup it’s ridiculous. On vacation, I’m usually pretty lazy so then I find myself using very little of it or using the same lip shade every day. I’ve come to realize a ton of makeup options is really not necessary on vacation. I’d rather get ready as quickly as possible so I can go out and enjoy the day.
Here is what’s in my travel makeup bag:
1. Primer –
Urban Decay Primer Spray &
Ulta’s Fabulous Face Foundation Primer
I like to spray the Urban Decay one on right after I wash my face. I feel like it helps lock in moisture. Then I use the Fabulous Face Foundation Primer after I’ve moisturized.
2. Foundation –
MATCHCo Foundation
I’ve shared my love for this foundation before. It’s lighter coverage than my other go to, Kat Von D Lock it Tattoo Foundation, so it’s perfect for vacation. I don’t like my makeup to be too overdone.
3. Concealer – Kat Von D Lock It Concealer, Mac Pro Longwear Concealer & Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correct Fluid
I use the Kat Von D to cover any pimples or dark spots and I mix the Urban Decay (shade – pink) and Mac for under my eyes.
4. Setting Powder –
Mac Mineralize Skinfinish Powder
My face is classic combination skin, a super oily t-zone and dry cheeks and chin. This helps set my foundation and keeps the oiliness under control.
5. Blush –
Nars Blush Palette
This has enough shade options and prevents me from bringing multiple blush options. I liked to use (lighter shade) during the day and (darker shade) at night
6. Brows –
Lorac Take a Brow
I don’t think Lorac even makes this any more or it’s just really hard to find sometimes. When I noticed it was out of stock a while ago online at Sephora and Ulta, I went to Ulta and bought a bunch in the store. I like my eyebrows to look noticeable but not overdone or drawn on.
7. Mascara –
Buxom
I use the waterproof one when on vacation so I don’t have to worry about raccoon eyes.
8. Lips –
Kylie Cosmetics
I like to take one neutral shade and a brighter shade for night. The Kylie lip kits are perfect for vacation because I can put it on in the morning and go about my day without worrying about touching up. I leave the liners at home and just take the gloss.
9. Eye Shadow Primer (not pictured) –
Kat Von D Lock it Color Correcting Eyeshadow Primer
Now truthfully, this I can probably do without. On this last trip to Montreal, I didn’t put eye shadow on once but I have on past vacations and this primer is the best because it keeps my shadow in place and there is no need for touch ups.
10. Eye Shadow –
Physicians Formula Palette
I like this palette because it’s small and has enough shades to create multiple looks.
11. Setting Spray –
Urban Decay All Nighter
Last but most important, is the setting spray. It keep my makeup in place all day which is what I want when I’m out enjoying my vacation. No need to touch ups throughout the day.
What I leave home – eyeliner, bronzer, highlighter, eyelash primer, lip primer because who has time for all that when you’re trying to explore a city or lay out on the beach?
Here’s a tip – take travel size items with you if you can. I purchased the small bottles of Urban Decay primer spray and setting spray a couple years ago and kept them once they were empty. I just refill them from my full size bottles when I’m going away.

I love Kat Von D! I haven’t had a chance to try out her foundation and concealer type products, but I’m dying to!
I’ve been looking for a new setting powder. Thanks for the great idea!
That’s an awesome idea about the filling the smaller travel sizes from the full size when traveling! I’ve really been wanting to try the Urban Decay color correcting fluid.
This is great to have and helpful so I know what to pack in my makeup bag when we go to Cancun in 2 months!! I’ll be packing lip gloss, mascara, eye shadow, foundation, makeup brush, and my primer. Also my face wash, toner and makeup removing wipes.
All solid, high quality picks! Love the Nars products – my go-tos!
That setting spray is a must when traveling!
I love the products you use! I am a huge fan of NARS (especially their orgasm blush)! I will have to try that BUXOM mascara!
I keep makeup to a minimum when I travel. The Physician’s Formula Palette is fabulous; my favorite colors. Setting Spray is a must too.
I don’t really wear makeup, but when I travel, I always keep beauty products to a minimum. Less is more for me sometimes 🙂
I’m a mascara and lipstick girl on an everyday base, when travel it’s usually lipgloss and nothing else! It’s good to know what you want to bring and not over pack though!
It’s SO hard to condense your daily routine into a travel friendly version. I am trying to figure what I want to take on my honeymoon and I know i want to go for light and glowy but I am such a full glam type of person.
La Belle Sirene
I love MAC’s pro longwear concealer! Can’t be without it!
This is good to know when on a trip so you can make sure all is packed and ready to go. Don’t want to be without an item and have to go shopping to it while on a trip!
You got quite a fabulous collection of different brands here… including many I’ve been meaning to try, but haven’t yet. Thanks for the suggestions. I’m pinning for later.
Some of these products are must haves! I love a great moisturizer when I’m traveling. It keeps me hydrated.
You have some good products in your purse.
I like the choice of color shades.
These are some nice products! My travel makeup differs too as I don’t like to take everything with me on the road.
I don’t have much in my make up bag because I just don’t have patience. I have an under-eye baggy hider, bronzer, eyeliner, mascara and blush. BOOM – that’s all I need!
My make-up bag usually contains the lipsticks I’m going to use on the trip plus my eyeliner. I don’t like bringing a lot especially when it’s out of the country.
I probably have just 4 items in my makeup purse; powder, eyeliner, mascara and lip balm.. having more than this means I am probably going to party all through. Great post and brands
I don’t wear that much makeup anymore, but my daughter does. I swear that her makeup bag and yours look a lot alike. I think you not only carry the same shades but the same brands as well.
I try not to overpack my makeup bag, but sometimes it does get out of control. If I have any sample sizes of products I usually toss those in there to save space or pick smaller, multitasking palettes.
I feel like I need to make a separate make-up bag for travel! We go on so many weekend trips and I find that moving things from my at-home one to my travel-one can get tedious and I often forget something at home!
I’m loving that Nars palette. My biggest problem is deciding on which lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes to bring. I’ve also found that having travel brushes helps cut down on the clutter.
I LOVE those eyeshadows! They are SO pretty!! 🙂
Love the nude shades. Great for everyday wear. I don’t wear a lot of make up except highlight the eyes
Good tips. I’m a notorious over packer too. I love the NARS blush paletter
Kat Von Dee’s products are so good. I’m also a huge fan of NARS. I haven’t even begun to think about what makeup I’m packing for my trip next month!
This was such a cute post. I love the eye shadow palette and the Kylie lipstick
I keep a make up bag. But I do not wear all the time. And It is not a full face. I love this great read.
Fun Post! I always use my travel size items i receive in my Ipsy bag for travel! I really need to try out Kat Von D!
You have some great things in your bag! I would love to try that Ulta Fabulous Face!
I usually have a makeup travel bag handy so I don’t have to think about repacking it when we travel. It’s also great to have on hand for when I’m rushed out the door but my husband is driving. I’m always putting on makeup in the car!
I love that Physicians Formula Naked Pallet — affordable and gorgeous! I’m definitely a simple girl when I pack — I like to have lots of room in my luggage to bring new things back ;).
I try to keep it pretty minimal for when I travel. This looks like a great way to travel for sure!
I’m always over packing too but these are great products. And I love the idea of keeping and refilling the travel size bottles.
Must haves! Love the palette. These are versatile products indeed.
Oooooo so many awesome suggestions! I have been all about the Kylie lip kits for awhile now. Hate the kardashians, but omg… those lip kits are on point!
VERY curious about the KAT VON DEE lock-it concealer! My under-eye bags are just…. THERE – no matter how much under eye stuff I put on. Would you rec Kat Von Dee for that or the Urban Decay?
I’d recommend the urban decay for under the eyes. The Kat Von D concealer is a little thick & creases if I use it under my eyes.
I do not know much about make ups. lipstick and eyeliner are two items I always keep. Thanks for sharing it. I hope one day I will learn this art of make up .

I highly recommend trying them! I’m a fan of the velvets now they’re less drying than the mattes.
